Chipotle Sweet Potato and Turkey Chili is made with:
- Onion: sweet or yellow onion will work best in this recipe
- Sweet potato: adds a sweetness to this recipe
- Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce: give the chili a savory smoky flavor
- Ground turkey: I used 93/7 turkey for this recipe
- Black beans: adds fiber and plant-based protein
- Diced tomatoes: diced tomatoes add flavor and extra veggies
- Tomato sauce: I used tomato sauce to keep the chili thick and creamy while still thinning it out a bit
- Spices: For spices, we’ll be using smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, coconut sugar, salt, and pepper

How to make Chipotle Sweet Potato and Turkey Chili
- Start by chopping your onion, sweet potatoes, chipotle peppers, and garlic
- Add onions and garlic to a large pot and cook until soft
- Add the ground turkey to the pot and cook
- Once the turkey is browned add in sweet potatoes, peppers, beans, tomatoes, and spices
- Let simmer until the sweet potatoes are tender and the flavors have melded together
Substitutions:
- I have not tried another type of ground meat, but you could substitute for ground beef or ground chicken
- Feel free to swap out black beans for dark red kidney beans
- Use fresh garlic or minced garlic
- Want more spice? Use fire-roasted diced tomatoes
- Butternut squash can be substituted in place of sweet potatoes
Recipe Tips:
- If you need more spice to your chili feel free to add 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- If your chili is too thick for your liking add 1/2-1 cup water or broth
- Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce come in a small can. You can easily freeze the leftovers for other recipes
